Just getting started, advice will be appreciated
I just bought the game this weekend and started playing. My husband got a a copy too so we'll be playing together most of the time. I'd like some advice so that we can get a good start since we have both ditched our first characters and are starting over with new ones. He has committed to ele/mo and I have started with a warrior but haven't selected a second profession yet.
I think that I want to concentrate on the hammer as my weapon. I have read that good hammers are hard to come by though so am I going wrong by leaning toward the hammer?
Also, I'm thinking about choosing necromancer as my second profession but I haven't seen anybody here talking about anything like that. Is that because it's just a stupid thing to do? It's seemed to work out pretty well with the trial run with the necromancer spells so far.
If not necromancer then how about ranger?

Hi there Isileo, welcome to guildwars and to the warrior profession (by far the best IMO )
It doesnt't really matters what weapon you start off playing with. If you don't like it it's pretty easy to change to another weapon. They all offer something good, and they all have the possibility to deal a very nice amount of damage:
Hammers: high damage and knockdown (my prefered weapon aswel)
Axe: capable of high spikes and easy access to deep wound
Sword: lovely dps(damage per second) and some nice elite skills in this line (also in the axe/hammer line tho)
As for your second profession: Don't worry about it too much, 90% of my warrior builds use 8 warrior skills. The only thing you should use your second profession for is to add some utility.
A few examples:
Necromancer has [skill]plague touch[/skill] and some cheap enchantment removal skills that might be handy.
Monk has [skill]mending touch[/skill] or a hard res if you want to bring one(like [skill]rebirth[/skill]). Watch out with this secondary tho, too many beginning warriors take monk as secondary because they (wrongfully) think they need to be able to survive without any help of a monk so they bring some healing skills like healing breeze/mending/whatever. This is NOT needed, and not at all a good option. Please don't do this
Some utility(condition removal for yourself) is good ,but remember not to overdo it. Bring alesia or another monk hench to heal you
Elementalist has conjures like [skill]conjure flame[/skill] which you could use to do even more damage. A comon used PvP skill in the ele line is [skill]shock[/skill]
Ranger offers some utility skills like [skill]antidote signet[/skill]. I sometimes bring this when I know I'll be facing some enemies that can blind me.
As far as mesmer goes for second profession I can't say too much about this as I don't remember using it in any normal build.
Another important thing to remember is: You're a warrior, you deal damage(a lot of it), you don't play Tank(trying to soak up all damage and wasting your entire skill bar to do so).
Now some useful links:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10216727
That's a very useful guilde. I really suggest you read it trough.
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page
That's a link to a very useful wiki, you can find information about pretty much everything in guildwars there
I hope this'll help you and in case any of the information I provided is wrong I'm sure someone here will correct me pretty soon
Have fun in guildwars, owning some serious face with your warrior

If you bring rebirth NO USING IT DURING BATTLE. please
hammer is ok in PVE(Player vs Enimies)
It rocks in Pvp(Player vs Player)
Axe-Not my pref but has very high dps but not always steady
Sword-Most class of all and also constant dps.
For secondary most any will do since you will rarley actually use any of the secondaries.

Hammers are extremely cheap on the player market because they are unpopular. You can buy perfect hammers for a fraction of the price of other weapons.
Don't confuse "unpopular" with ineffective; some hammer builds are on par with some of the best warrior builds in the game. Hammers are unpopular because so few people want to use them over swords, or to a lesser extent axes. The expensive items in the Guild Wars economy are expensive because they are pretty, shiny status symbols... not because they're effective.

[skill=text]Plague Touch[/skill] is the reason most warriors choose necromancer as secondary.
Its not a bad choice, but you don't want to run too many necromancy spells on your warrior. For one you don't have the energy (or energy management) of a real necromancer, and furthermore your hammer(/axe/sword) will do much, much more damage. Instead, choose maybe one or two necro skills that add to your utility or cover up a vulnerability (i.e. Plague Touch). Don't choose something you need a huge attribute investment in to make it work. If you find yourself wanting to be more of a necromancer than a warrior, you probably should just make a necromancer.

Hammers, axes and swords are all good. just note that while using a hammer you do not have access to a shield which is a noticeable decrease in armor. I prefer Axes myself because AoA=win in PvE.

Probably the best advice I would offer to you is to read about some of the skills available for each profession, and choose your secondary profession then.
Choose what type of armor will benefit your style of fighting most. As a melee fighter, you're going to rely on your armor more than other professions, so read up on the various armor types, and runes, and what they can do for your armor.
Get all the skills for your warrior, whether you think you'll need them or not, and get all the skills for your secondary profession, whether you think you'll use them or not. I would suggest using no more than 2-3 skills from your secondary profession in your skilbar at any time. As you get more experienced, you'll come up with a few builds of your own, and it would be nice to have as many skills avilable to you as possible.
You want to use hammers; they're a good weapon in PvE. Keep your eye out for all hammers that drop for you--the hammer may or may not be good, but they may contain upgrades that you may want to salvage later. Don't be too quick to ditch other good weapons that might drop for you--swords and axes are also excellent weapons to try out evry now and then.
Most importantly, DO NOT allow your warrior to be run from town to town--to be a good warrior, you need to learn to to fight, and you can't do that if you'r in a group that's looking to get run all over the pace. Do a lot of the side quests (and especially all the skill quests, if you're playing Prophecies).
Enjoy!

I'm liking the hammer. I got a fairly good one last night for the level that I'm at and every time that I get a new one the quality goes up so all is well. I'm liking the hammer. The last character that I started I used mostly a sword with and it looks as though it is moving faster but I'm taking the bad guys down very quick with the hammer.
Still haven't picked a second profession yet. I'm playing them all out and having fun. I did get a full set of new aromor by trading with collectors. Somebody came up and helped find the gargoyle head collector and then gave me the skulls to get the boots with. I guess that they didn't like my fashion faux paux with the boots that didn't match the rest.

Which campaign are you and your hubby playing? That can help out with what advice is available/viable for you. Also, what levels/area are you in?
Focusing on your warrior I'm gonna do the broken record thing and probably repeat somethings.
Your secondary is not so vital and regardless, there is eventually a spot in each campaign where you will be able to change that.
Your observation on hammers attacking slower than swords(or axes too) is true. Axes and Swords attack once every 1.33 seconds and hammers hit slower at about 1 x 1.77 seconds. They all have similar DPS(Damage per Second) though so don't take that too harshly.
Early on in any campaign you will not have access to any elite skills. In prophecies for example they become first available in the Crystal Desert. If you have played other RPG's the warriors here are a bit different. The classic tank or paladin doesn't exist like in some games. Warriors kill things.... and then kill more things.
Good luck and have fun.
I wont promise to come help out, but if you have questions I am usually willing to answer them ingame and help out that way. My main characters name is to the left.

Stick with W/N, we are a dying breed of warrior that W/Mo seem to out breed us or something...
Plague Touch is obvious but only if your monk is a retard. [it happens]
I've found LOTS of lovin' from Well of Ruin as well as a WHOLE lot of Curses for the warrior. [think hexes that affect physical damage, aka YOUR domain]
You only need one. Mark of Pain, Weaken Armor, etc. Enchant removal is deadly on a warrior needing to pierce a defense. Rigor Mortis and Rend Enchantments are paramount for high level play. [more rend, less rigor]
Blood magic, which sucks, has ONE SUPER POWERED skill in Mark of Fury. Adrenline boosting hex for your whole team to take advantage of? Hell yeah...

Now this gives me goose bumps! That's kind of what I was looking for in the necro thing. During the necro try out, I'm in Presearing still, I was using Life Siphon just before attacking with Frenzy and then following up with whatever adrenaline based power stroke I had at the time. It was pretty neat to be bashing away at the bad guy and be gaining health at the same time.
Of course I just now have enough skills with the new character that I can't fit all of them on the skill bar so I;m experimenting a lot.
Y'all are great! I really appreciate the time that your putting in helping me and all of the offers of in game help.

One last thing, don't rely on your secondary profession for healing, especially not Life Siphon. Warrior heals are more useful. Stuff like [wiki]Healing Signet[/wiki], [wiki]Lion's Comfort[/wiki], [wiki]"Watch Yourself!"[/wiki], or [wiki]Save Yourselves![/wiki]. Don't go overboard with the selfheals. Pick one of the aforementioned, and let the Monks do their job.

They have proph, notice she said someone helped her get the gargoyle heads for armor, ya thats the armor collector in the catacombs(boots i believe). Hammer's are great IMO, take a conjure and 16 hammer mastrey and watch dmg skyrocket.

I mentioned that Blood Magic sucks. As a whole really it does Mark of Fury is the only Blood magic a w/n should be bringing. The only other one, maybe, would be Demonic Flesh but you've got prot monks who can do better I'd hope.
Curses are good in that they're very energy efficient. They either use a long recycle time or long duration. Hell, parasitic bond helps teammates cover hexes at the worst case scenario... :\
Curses are also affected the most by physical damage. Barbs, Weaken Armor, Well of Ruin, mark of pain, and such help a warrior to no end. It also affects plague touch if you manage to stuff 8 points into curses. [that's saving 5e. a GOOD thing in fact]

Last night I went ahead and committed to necro being my second profession. Now I just have get some more useful skills unlocked for both the warrior and the necro. I should be leaving presearing tonight. I've done about everything that I can do there except get a few more skills and two or three quests that I have left open.

You should choose a ele secondary instead! Conjure weapon rocks and is a easy way to sky rocket your damage using any weapon. Several other ele spells are also very useful for snares and are very affordable even for the warriors low energy pool.

those kind of things are more practical on axe or sword builds
Hammers have knockdown no need for snare and they already pump out killer damage.
